Dear World,
My time as a legal intern has been interesting in a very good way. I've done things here that I thought I would never do as an intern. Such as sitting in on a meeting for various kinds of situations like the closing and refinancing of a home. I know it sounds boring but from the inside view where I stand it’s pretty fascinating and there’s much to learn on a day to day basis. My day is from 9-3; I walk into the office and help Alicia start off the day. Plus my co-workers are the best; I think I am pretty lucky to have an office full of friends. Did I mention the office dog Toby? (He's more like Alicia’s dog but he loves us all.)
Alicia O’Connell is one of two attorneys in this office the other is her father Attorney Philip O’Connell. He has a hard exterior but is a very kind and funny man. Doesn’t everyone wish that they could work with their parent? O’Connell and O’Connell is a law firm that deals with estates, trust, wills and other things and they report to the probate court. Alicia and I take field trips to the court house and to Registry of Deeds. Not all law firms are the same; they’re all different in their own ways, Alicia says. I also agree not every law firm has a dog as a cute greeter at the door. I’m sure we handle cases differently from the way meetings are set up to how phone calls are handled to their filing system. Fun fact about O’Connell and O’Connell: there’s a huge garage that is filled with files (on neatly organized cabinets of course) but every file is there even though there in the electronic system also. It’s ok to keep it old school sometimes right? Not many employees get the chance to have lunch with their bosses and if they do even a smaller amount of those employees enjoy having lunch with their boss. Another plus of working in an office like this is you can be dressy. I know I love dresses and heels so I can put all my heels too use.
I've learned and used the basic skills of needed to work/survive in an offices such as copying, filing, typing, writing, using a postage maker, and most interesting using a typewriter all that good stuff. I learned how to using an old fashioned electronic filing system called Standard. I get to meet new people every day at the courthouse and the Registry of Deeds. Working at a family business is less of working than just helping. If you have a strong interest of law like me everyone is willing to teach you a thing or too. A lot goes on in one day in the office, meetings, phone calls, Will signings. In the beginning of each month business is slow but the last week is crazier than ever but that’s okay because I get to experience all kinds of business slow and fast. I am very thankful to be able to intern in a place where I could learn and enjoy it so much.
Sincerely,
Margaret
