Girls Celebration 2011

Girls Incorporated of Worcester celebrates our signature event of the year - Girls Celebration to honor the accomplishments of our teen Girl Awardees and local community leaders that truly exemplify Girls Inc.’s mission of inspiring all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. The Girls Celebration Event 2011 will be held on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at Blais Pavilion in the Aaron Lazare Research Building, University of Massachusetts, 364 Plantation Street, Worcester from 5:00–7:00pm.

Girls Incorporated of Worcester has long been committed to providing under-served youth with the opportunity to attend our enriching and fun school year and summer camp programs offered at Winthrop House, our in-town facility located at 125 Providence Street, and at Camp Kinneywood, our beautiful outdoor camp located near the Holden Reservoir.

The event will feature our special guest speaker, Kathrine Switzer, best known as the woman who challenged the all-male tradition of the Boston Marathon and became the first women to officially enter and run the event. Her entry created an uproar and worldwide notoriety when a race official tried to forcibly remove her from the competition. Three decades later, the incident continues to capture the public imagination and is, in part, the reason Switzer has dedicated her multi-faceted career to creating opportunities on all fronts for girls and women. Her bib number, 261, has become a symbol to break down barriers.

All proceeds of this event will go directly to Girls Inc.'s Scholarship Fund to support summer camp program scholarships for children from low-income families, enabling them to access Girls Inc.’s recreational, leadership, and violence prevention programs related to peer pressure, substance abuse, domestic violence, and sex education.

There will be light appetizers and silent auction. Tickets are $26.10 and may be purchased in advance or at the door. For tickets, contact Anne Sadick at 508-755-6455 x21 or .
