Summer Camp Programs Were Super Successful

Jocelyne

Jocelyne, 11 years old, has been a coming to Girls Inc. for six years and really enjoys the opportunities we provide.  In fact, she enjoys Girls Inc. so much she chose to have her adoption party here!  For many years Jocelyne has participated in Girls Inc.’s after school program Operation SMART (Science, Math And Relevant Technology).  As a first year Summer STEM participant, she also became a peer leader to girls who were new to the program.  Through the variety of activities and exposure to different areas of STEM, Jocelyne became especially interested in Marine Biology.  The opportunity for an overnight camping trip to Boston Harbor Islands with the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Youth Opportunities Program “fueled her fire”.  There she learned about the marine life that fills the waters so close to home.  Through her participation in Summer STEM, Jocelyne shared that she had a better understanding of the importance of math in achieving a career in the STEM field.  When asked if she felt that women are equally represented in the field of STEM she replied, “I think that it’s improving and there is opportunity for women to do something really, really, big in science going forward.  I hope that I will be part of that”.  Jocelyne also said that she thinks women still get paid a lot less than males doing the same job and that it is not fair.
