Girls Inc. to Host College Shower for 20 Graduating High School Girls

Girls Inc. of Worcester will hold a college shower for 20 college found Worcester high school senior girls on Thursday, June 15 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Alden Hall, 125 Providence Street. The girls will receive college supplies from generous donations from EMC employees, Hasbro, and many individuals.

Eureka! is Girls Inc.’s unique capstone program that encourages girls in grades 8-12 to explore career paths and post-secondary educational opportunities in STEM.

Thanks to the generosity of 19 different employers, Girls Inc. of Worcester placed 51 Eureka! participants in internships in the summer of 2015 and will place 55 girls in internships this coming summer.

Girls Inc. of Worcester Receives $220,000 for STEM Programs

Girls Inc. of Worcester received support for its STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) programs:

  • Eureka! (grades 8-12)
  • Operation SMART (grades K-6)
  • Summer STEM (grades 7-12)
  • Thinking SMART (grades 7-8)

As the majority of the 350 girls involved in these programs are between the ages of 10-14, we are reaching them at a juncture when many girls’ interest in these subjects is at risk of declining.

Studies show that STEM jobs over the next 10 years will outpace non-STEM jobs significantly; jobs in computer systems design and related services (a field that is dependent on high-level math and problem-solving skills) are growing exponentially. The occupations with the fastest growth in the coming years, such as biomedical engineers, network systems and data communications analyst, and medical scientists, all call for degrees in STEM fields.

Girls Promoting Safety (GPS) Program

GPS is a strengths-based violence prevention program of Girls Inc. of Worcester and the YWCA of Central Massachusetts.  Through intensive, interactive, weekly, school-based sessions, the GPS program helps girls in grades 7 and 8 to develop skills and competencies to avoid and/or prevent their involvement with violence. This allows girls to create and maintain a lifetime of healthy relationships.
